Clontarf Historical Society - 'John Rocque’s Clontarf: a guide to the area in 1762’

'John Rocque’s Clontarf: a guide to the area in 1762’ by Professor Colm Lennon. John Rocque was a celebrated 18th century map-maker, mainly known maps of 1746 London and of 1756 Dublin which are of great historical importance. This talk explores Rocque’s map of Clontarf of 1762, which depicts the houses, buildings, roads, fields, gardens and maritime features of the neighbourhood, in an age of enlightened estate-planning, before it began very slowly to change from manorial enclave to suburb of Dublin. Colm Lennon recently retired as Professor of History in NUI Maynooth. His latest book is John Rocque’s Dublin: a guide to the Georgian city (Dublin, 2010), and he is currently working on a history of Clontarf. New members always welcome, for all enquiries please call (01) 8338711. Annual Membership €20, Individual talks €4.
